Today we talk about waste and how to convert this waste in a meaningful and usable material. Today we give you some very simple tips on how to make Organic Fertilizer at home.
Why to make Organic Fertilizers or Compost
Do you remember you childhood. Many of us still has that old house in our home town or village. A house with a nice backyard with lot of flowers and trees or a house which has a beautiful garden in the front. We would love to have them again. But living in metros and big cities, having a nice garden is a luxury. But we still make sure that we decorate our balconies and terrace ( if we are one of the lucky ones) with lot of natural flowers, and other decorative plants.
We lovingly water them and wait for that beautiful flower to bloom. But we know that these little beautiful plants need food. And so we we go and buy fertilizers from outside. Either chemical fertilizers or organic ones.
But do you know that we can make these organic fertilizers at home. Yes it is very easy to make compost at home and we don’t know it. In this post my friends, I will give a step by step guide to make organic compost in your home. And believe me they are much better than the one you get from outside.
You plants are going to love this organic fertilizer 🙂
What is a compost?
So compost, my friends, are the decayed organic matter. These two terms are important ie. decayed and organic. And what is getting decayed ? That is the waste which is generated in you kitchen like Banana peels, Potato peels etc. It is organic because, because no chemicals are involved. It’s are natural ingredients . And this process of decaying is called as composting.

Step by Step guide to make organic fertilizer at home
There are essentially four steps to make a compost at home.
Step 1 – Choose a compost container
Choosing a container in the first step in this process. Many of us keep thinking if we need to buy an special compost container. I myself had checked a lot on Amazon to buy some in budget containers and there are many available. But you don’t need to. You can use any thing which is lying unused at home. It can be a plastic container. Or even a cardboard will work just fine. One thing you have to make sure that if you are using a plastic container, make sure that you make small holes in the around the container. This is needed for proper aeration. That is why you cannot use a steel container. But a plastic one with holes will work. Or card board box will be just fine.
Step 2 – Choose the Material to Compost
Next you have to choose what you need to compost. And you please refer again to above section on what you can compost and what you cannot. So first get hold of the green waste as I have mentioned before. Like Potato peels, Fruits peels, any ripe fruits which you are not going to eat etc. Then get hold of some news paper and twigs etc. These are brown waste as I have mentioned before. Shred them in small pieces using a scissor.
Step 3 – Layer the Material
Now third and most important step. Layring the. There is a way to do that. So layer around a quarter of the container with dry leaves, shredded newspapers, twigs etc. This brown waste is essential for absorbing moisture. Then put the green waste from kitchen so that only a quarter of the container is left empty. Cover that top quarter again with brown waste.
Step 4 – Initiate the composting process
Now this is the last step in this process. You need to add a little bit of sour curd or butter milk. Why is this needed. because butter milk or curd will give the needed microbes to start this process.
Once done, cover the container and keep it for 4 to 5 weeks. Sprinkle some water once a week.
How do you know that your compost is ready. You will find that it has become dark and rich in color and you know that you have a prefect compost which is ready.
Give this organic fertilizer to you little plants and they will thank you with a smile 🙂 🙂
In the end I would like to say that things are simple. We want to do something and first thing we do is to check online market place. We have lots of things in our home itself which can make our life easier. We just need to figure out and use it. Hope you like my this step by step guide to make organic fertilizer at home.
