April 6, 2020 is celebrated as Mahavir Jayanti. Lord Mahavir is considered the twenty-fourth and last Tirthankara of Jainism. Mahavir Jayanti is celebrated as the birth anniversary of Lord Mahavir. Lord Mahavr was born on the thirteenth day of Chaitra month and was named ‘Vardhamana’.
The festival of Mahavir Jayanti is also known as Mahavir Janma Kalyanak Divas.
When is Mahavir Jayanti Celebrated
This festival falls in the month of March and April and the date is according to the Jain calendar. It is the 13th ‘Sud’ day of Chaitra month is also known as ‘Veer Teras’.
It is said that Lord Mahavir was born in 599 BC. That is almost 3000 years ago. He was born as a prince. He was born in the state of Vajji which had it’s capital as the well known city of Vaishali.
It is said that at the age of 30, Mahavir ji left his home in the pursuit of spiritual knowledge. He did a hard tapasya for around 12 years. After which he is believed to have attained Kevala Jnana (omniscience or the सर्व ज्ञान ). He preached to his disciples the way of life for around 30 years. At the age of 72, he attained salvation from Pavapuri.
So this day and this festival has a great significance for people from Jain community. On this day people take out processions (रथ यात्रा ) and sing songs in praise of Lord Mahavir and his teachings. On this day people from the community gather at the Jain temples for spiritual gatherings , community meetings. They fast, sing religious rhymes and celebrate.
