Labor Day also called as May Day is an annual holiday which is celebrated in honour of workers and workers union. In India labour Day is also called as Antarrashtriya Shramik Diwas or Kamgar Din. It is also referred as International Workers’ Day or just Worker’s Day.
Why May 1 is Labor Day?
May 1 was chosen to be International Workers’ Day to commemorate the 1886 Haymarket affair in Chicago. May 1 is marked as International Labour Day and is also called as May day. The day is dedicated to labourers and the working class. Labour Day is an annual public holiday in many countries.
What is Haymarket affair?
Haymarket affair is an incident in history which occurred on May 4, 1886, when a labor protest rally near Chicago’s Haymarket Square turned into a riot because someone threw a bomb at police.
This resulted in violence in which it is said that 8 people died. Despite a lack of evidence against them, eight labor activists were convicted in connection with the bombing. The Haymarket Riot was viewed as a setback for the organized labor movement in US. The demonstration which started as peaceful one, was fighting for rights like the eight-hour workday.
May day is celebrated to commemorate this event in history.
Who invented Labor Day?
It is said that, Peter J. McGuire, a carpenter and labor union leader, was the one who came up with the idea for Labor Day. He was of the view that workers should be honored with their own day. He proposed his idea to New York’s Central Labor Union early in 1882.
The day May 1 was later choosen as the day when International Workers day is to be celebrated!

The party leader Singaravelu Chettiar lead the celebrations and the event was celebrated at 2 different places in Chennai. One celebration was held at the beach opposite to the Madras High Court and the other one was held at the Triplicane beach.
