What is Earth Day ?

Earth Day is global event. It is a annual event and is celebrated on April 22. It celebrates the environmental movement and raises awareness about pollution and ways to maintain a clean and green planet. It was first celebrated in 1970, Hence this year marks the 50th anniversary of the celebrations.

Why earth day is celebrated?

The earth day was founded in 1970 and it is celebrated to emphasize the importance of environmental issues and focuses of educating people on the same. Hence on this day across the world events are organized to showcase planet earth, nature and its importance in life. Small children and students are told about the pressing environmental issues are are taught to think and act over these issues. How did earth day started?

The credit of starting the Earth Day goes to a US Lawmaker, Senator Gaylord Nelson,. He was a democrat from Wisconsin. He was determined to convince the federal government that the planet was at risk. Nelson is considered as one of the leaders of modern environmental movement.

Nelson conceived the idea of Earth Day in 1969. He motivated the then government and people of United Stated of America to actively participate in this concept. His efforts were recognized by everyone and the first earth day was celebrated in April 22, 1970.

1) A highlight of the United Nations’ Earth Day celebration in New York City is the ringing of the Peace Bell, a gift from Japan, at the exact moment of the vernal equinox.

2) On this Day in 2009, Disney released a documentary film called Earth that followed the migration paths of four animal families

3) On the very first Earth Day, 20 million people gathered in the streets of America to protest the industrial revolution. An environmental movement was born as a result.

4) Earth Day was renamed officially by the UN in 2009 as “International Mother Earth Day

5) On this Day in 2012, more than 100,000 people rode bikes in China to reduce CO2 emissions and save fuel

6) In an Earth Day celebration in 2011, 28 million trees were planted in Afghanistan by the Earth Day Network

7) In Panama, 100 endangered species of orchids were planted and maintained to prevent their extinction in honor of Earth Day

  1. Recycle: Reduce waste and reuse and recycle whatever we can
  2. Clean the surroundings: Let’s not throw waste, dispose it at proper disposable sites
  3. Save water: Clean air and clean water is all we need. Today we already see how we are struggling with water in summer. Lets save water
  4. Reduce plastic: We all know how problematic they are for environment. Let’s try to limit their use
  5. Educate: Educate as many as you can on this issue
  6. Choose sustainable lifestyle – be more near to nature
  7. Shop wisely: Don’s buy things you do not need so that you don’t have to throw it.
  8. Plant a tree : The more you plant them, the more better

How to inspire children on this day

  1. Organize debates and quizzes around earth day in the school
  2. Make them take pledge to save earth and mother nature
  3. Encourage them to take up some environment related projects / science projects
  4. Make signs boards for school encouraging the theme
  5. Make a video or presentation urging others to take action.
